Beyond the Crowds: 3 Off-the-Beaten-Path Islands for Adventure, Dining & Deep Relaxation

Beyond the Crowds: 3 Off-the-Beaten-Path Islands for Adventure, Dining & Deep Relaxation

There’s something appealing about the places everyone wants to visit.

But there’s something even better about finding a destination where you can have the beautiful beach, the memorable meal, the adventure, and the quiet moment—without feeling like you're following the same vacation itinerary as everyone else.

Recently, I was researching destinations for a traveler who had a very specific wish list:

Less crowds. More adventure. Excellent dining. And relaxation whenever they wanted it.

That combination sent me looking beyond the usual island vacation destinations.

Three islands kept rising to the top of my list: the Maldives, Curaçao, and Saint Lucia.

At first glance, they might seem like very different vacations—and they are. But each offers that wonderful combination of experiences and escape that I think makes a vacation truly memorable.

And here's something else I discovered during my research:

You don't necessarily have to choose between an extraordinary destination and an attainable vacation.

Let's take a closer look.

The Maldives: More Than an Overwater Bungalow

When you hear “Maldives,” an overwater bungalow is probably the first thing that comes to mind.

Crystal-clear water. White sand. Private villas. Breakfast floating in a pool.

And yes, you can absolutely have all of that.

But the Maldives is much more than the picture-perfect resort experience.

Made up of 1,192 islands spread across the Indian Ocean, the Maldives offers a surprising variety of ways to experience the destination. Along with private-island resorts, travelers can find local guesthouses, boutique accommodations, liveaboards, and opportunities to explore beyond a traditional resort stay.

For the adventurous traveler, the ocean is the real playground.

Snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, surfing, dolphin excursions, and other water-based experiences are all part of the Maldivian experience. The country's many atolls also offer opportunities to encounter an incredible variety of marine life—including manta rays and whale sharks in some areas.

Then, when you've had enough adventure for one day?

You can go back to your villa, find a quiet stretch of sand, enjoy a beautiful dinner, and do absolutely nothing.

That balance is one of the things I love about the Maldives.

It can be as active or as peaceful as you want it to be.

And while the Maldives certainly has a reputation for luxury, “luxury” doesn't have to mean choosing the most expensive villa on the island. Different accommodation styles and experiences can make the destination more accessible than many travelers assume.

Best for: Couples, honeymooners, milestone trips, and travelers who want privacy, incredible water, marine life, and the freedom to alternate between adventure and complete relaxation.

Curaçao: Color, Culture, Food & Caribbean Water

If your idea of the perfect Caribbean vacation involves more than sitting beside a resort pool, Curaçao deserves a serious look.

This colorful island offers turquoise water and beautiful beaches, but it also brings something else to the table: personality.

Curaçao's multicultural history can be seen throughout the island, particularly in its architecture, neighborhoods, food, music, and local traditions.

And then there's Willemstad.

The colorful capital is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is worth exploring beyond simply stopping for a photo. Wander the streets, browse local shops, enjoy a long lunch, and take time to experience the island's history and culture.

Of course, you should still make time for the beach.

Curaçao is known for its diving and snorkeling, with numerous dive sites and opportunities to explore the underwater world directly from shore. That means you don't necessarily have to spend your entire day on a scheduled excursion to have a memorable ocean adventure.

If you want to get off the water, you can explore the island's natural side, including Christoffel National Park, with hiking trails and panoramic views.

And then there's the food.

Curaçao's diverse cultural influences show up beautifully on the plate. Local Caribbean flavors meet Dutch, Latin American, African, and other international influences, creating a dining scene that is considerably more interesting than the phrase “Caribbean food” might suggest.

This is the kind of destination where you can spend the morning snorkeling, the afternoon exploring, and the evening lingering over dinner.

No rushing required.

Best for: Travelers and couples who want a Caribbean vacation with culture, exploration, diving and snorkeling, colorful surroundings, and a strong food scene.

Saint Lucia: The Island That Gives You Both Adventure & Exhale

Then there's Saint Lucia.

If the goal is to find an island where you can do something exciting and then completely exhale, Saint Lucia may be the standout.

The scenery alone makes it memorable.

Rainforest. Volcanic mountains. Beaches. Fishing villages. Dramatic coastline. And, of course, the iconic Pitons.

But Saint Lucia isn't just beautiful. It's remarkably diverse.

You can hike through the rainforest, explore waterfalls, go ziplining, snorkel, dive, visit local communities, take a boat out on the water, or simply spend the day enjoying the view.

For those who want to get their hiking shoes dirty, Gros Piton offers a more challenging adventure. For something less strenuous, the Tet Paul Nature Trail provides spectacular views and an opportunity to learn more about the island's natural landscape and local agriculture.

And then you can switch gears completely.

Spend the next afternoon at the beach.

Book a spa treatment.

Soak in mineral-rich waters.

Enjoy a leisurely lunch.

Watch the sunset.

That ability to change the pace is one of Saint Lucia's biggest strengths.

The island also offers a wonderful mix of local and international dining, with fresh seafood, Caribbean and Creole influences, locally grown ingredients, and restaurants ranging from casual local spots to more elevated dining experiences.

It's romantic without requiring you to sit still for an entire week.

Adventurous without requiring an exhausting itinerary.

Relaxing without being boring.

Best for: Couples, milestone travelers, and anyone who wants dramatic scenery, outdoor adventure, beautiful beaches, memorable food, and plenty of opportunities to slow down.

What These Three Islands Have in Common

So what made these three destinations stand out?

They each give travelers options.

That’s also at the heart of how I approach travel planning at Harbor & Hearth Travel. Learn more about me and why I believe travel should feel personal, meaningful, and easier to navigate.

And I think options are one of the most underrated luxuries in travel.

You can explore—or sleep in.

You can book an excursion—or spend the afternoon by the water.

You can seek out a local restaurant—or enjoy a beautiful dinner at your resort.

You can fill your day—or leave it completely open.

That's especially important for travelers who don't want a vacation that feels like another job.

The goal isn't to see absolutely everything.

The goal is to come home feeling like you actually experienced the destination and had time to enjoy yourself.

So… Are These Islands Actually Within Reach?

This is where I think travelers sometimes make assumptions.

When we see images of an overwater villa in the Maldives, a luxury resort overlooking the Pitons, or a gorgeous Caribbean beach, it's easy to assume the entire destination is automatically out of reach.

But a destination and a particular travel style aren't the same thing.

Where you stay, when you travel, how long you stay, how you get there, what experiences you choose, and how you structure your trip can make a significant difference.

That's where thoughtful travel planning matters.

Sometimes “approachable luxury” isn't about finding the cheapest option.

It's about finding the right option for you—one that gives you the experience you actually value without paying for things you don't care about.

Maybe that's a beautiful resort with an incredible beach instead of a private overwater villa.

Maybe it's spending more on a once-in-a-lifetime excursion and choosing a more moderate accommodation.

Maybe it's traveling during a different season.

Or maybe it's finding the property, room category, location, and inclusions that make the overall trip worthwhile.

There isn't one right way to do luxury.

If you're wondering what kind of trip might make sense for your budget, travel style, and priorities, let's start planning.

Luxury can simply mean having the freedom to enjoy your vacation your way.

Your Kind of Paradise Might Be Somewhere Different

The best destination isn't necessarily the one with the most Instagram posts.

It might be the place that gives you exactly what you've been looking for.

For some travelers, that's the otherworldly beauty and privacy of the Maldives.

For others, it's the color, culture, food, and underwater adventures of Curaçao.

And for someone else, it might be Saint Lucia—with its dramatic landscapes, rainforest adventures, beautiful beaches, and permission to slow all the way down.

That's one of my favorite parts of being a travel advisor.

I don't believe in simply handing someone a list of popular destinations and saying, “Pick one.”

I want to understand how you want to travel.

Do you want adventure?

Quiet?

Great food?

Beautiful surroundings?

Time together?

A little bit of everything?

Because your vacation should fit your life—not the other way around.

And sometimes, the best trip is the one that takes you just a little beyond the crowds.

Ready to find your own version of paradise?

Let's talk about where you want to go—and, just as importantly, how you want to feel when you get there.

Destination information and availability can change. Travel recommendations are based on research and individual traveler preferences, and specific accommodations, experiences, and pricing will vary.
